Step One
Start by backcombing or teasing sections of hair with a rattail comb. It is best to start sectioning hair at the nape of the neck and work upward until the entire head is complete. Sections should
be approximately three inches wide. Backcomb each section beginning at the scalp and teasing out about one inch. This backcombing will create a base to work with and provide the necessary
shape for your French Twist. It is best if your hair has not been freshly washed to create this style. |
 |
Step Two
Take a second look at your backcombing and make sure all hair was teased into a section. If you miss a section, the hair will separate when swept back and will be uneven in your French Twist.
Take this opportunity to ensure you backcombed all sections to the same volume all over the head.

Step Three
Select a brush with many bristles, and, holding it sideways against the hair, begin to gently sweep the hair back and away from the face. Use the brush to smooth the hair into place without allowing the bristles to dig into the hair and remove the backcombing. |
 |
Step Four
Start pinning hair in a line where you want the twist to be on your head |
 |
Step Five
Gather your hair and begin twisting upward from the nape of the neck. Continue until you feel the twist is tight and secure. |
 |
Step Six
Twist while lifting the hair so the end is pointing up. It does not have to look perfect at this point because you will go back and smooth all the loose hairs into the twist. The goal of this step is to just get the hair up into
a twist.
|
 |
Step Seven
Fold the ends of your hair down toward the nape of the neck and tuck into the twist. Use pins to keep the hair tucked neatly into the twist. Keep spraying layers of hairspray as you pin. The end of your rattail comb makes an excellent tool for tucking in loose hairs. |
 |
Step Eight
A French Twist requires lots of hairpins or bobby pins and a lot of hairspray. Curly hair usually requires hairpins, while straight hair usually requires bobby pins. Sticky aerosol hairspray works best. Select a
product that offers a firm hold and avoid product that moisturizes. As you construct your French Twist, continue to lightly spray hair and add pins. For an extra special touch, try adding a flower, a beautiful barrette, or rhinestone comb to your French Twist.
